About

Club beginnings:

Our club’s humble beginnings can be traced back to 1963 when fishing pioneers Jimmy de Pradines, Corrie Cornelis, Eddy Duffy, Jopes van Rooyen and Hugh Abercrombie started what was initially only a fresh water fishing club back in the day.

As the members purchased boats, the club expanded its facets to include deep sea angling and so the club developed over the years into what is the largest in the province of Mpumalanga today.

As a deep sea angling fraternity the NDAC (Nelspruit District Angling Club) is closely associated with the MDSAA (Mpumalanga Deep Sea Angling Association), with a number of its members on the MDSAA committee.

We are proud to say that the NDAC has produced a number of Springbok/Protea anglers over the years…home grown from our very own club here in Nelspruit!

As a club we are proactive and enthusiastic about fishing. We promote our juniors and our club is well represented at National level annually. At least once a month we offer a tackle box at our local clubhouse, The Marlin Pub and Grill, where our members also enjoy fantastic discounts on excellent food and ice cold beers.

The club offers two organised deep sea angling competitions in Mozambique annually, namely the Inhaca Challenge and the Onderberg Species Invitational Bonanza. The NDAC has gone from strength to strength over the years and we would like to encourage you to join our club today… whether you are a novice or avid angler.

History of the Club

21 March 2012

Herewith my recollections of the early days of the NDAC. Regrettably my memory is rather vague about the distant past. However, for what it is worth, the following:

I came to Nelspruit in the late 1948. There was no fishing club here, and so we joined the Barberton Angling Club. About 1949 Maurice Streak and I founded the first club. Streak, a legal man, wrote the constitution. This was a freshwater club as sea fishing was then limited to a very few people. The club was later reformed and I passed on the documents to the clubs secretary.

Our first group activity to Mozambique took place in 1950 to San Martinho. The following went: Attie Bester & family, Izak Greyling, Piet & Danie Ehmke and myself. Afterwards I regularly visited San Martinho and later Inhaca Island with Des Naish, Jannie Viljoen and George Bushney … later also with Peter Wiids’ skiboat.

In 1965 I was captain of the first NDAC International competition at Bazaruto. I believe we were the first NDAC team to release a gamefish (sailfish). The team members were me, self captain Corrie van Vuren, Kokkie van Staden and Bob Price. Unfortunately I can no longer remember the names of the chaps I knew in the club. The problem was that we did not diarize events in those days.

I enclose some photos, perhaps they land meaning to the past.

Kindest Regards

Hugh Abercrombie
